With the POR-15 Self Etch Primer spray can, you can even topcoat POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating that's been in place for months or years.
POR-15 Self Etch Primer is NOT a high-build primer like POR-15 High Build Primer, but it can be sprayed on almost any painted surface and can be top coated in 20 - 30 minutes. It bonds incredibly well to POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating, and all topcoats bond incredibly well to POR-15 Self Etch Primer. It can be sanded lightly, and if desired, multiple coats may be applied.
In situations where you are topcoating a very old POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating finish, we first recommend a light sanding with any 280 to 320 grit paper.
Replaces Tie Coat Primer
POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating cured before you could top coat? Not a problem, use POR-15 Self Etch Primer over the cured POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating and then top coat it.

The spray nozzle on the spray can seemed to allow the primer to flow out of the can vey consistently, without any material buildup on the nozzle. Primer went on to item being coated in a consistent wet, non-dry spot manner. Able to apply even amount of material in hard to reach locations on item without invoking a material ‘run’ or ‘sag’. Primer was applied over a substrate surface that was mix of bare metal and 40 plus years old factory original coating, prepared using red Scotchbrite, and POR 15 Cleaner and Metal Prep products. Primer was ready for Topcoat in 30 minutes, as stated in directions, all of this coating activity being perform in the mid 60 degree temperatures. Topcoat went on well over the primer, with no lifting, wrinkling, sagging, runs, or any of the other myriad of paint imperfections that can occur. I definitely recommend this product.
Nice product works well
Utilized as part of truck bed liner application on a UTV with rusted bed floor. Stripped/wire brushed floor to bare metal and cleaned/prepped. Used self etch primer on sides (masked 4" up and lightly sanded only) as prior paint still in reasonable shape. 2 coats POR-15 on all then 2 coats bed liner on floor only. POR-15 so far appears very tightly adherent to primer on sides of bed, probably 20-30 mils minimum thick achieved. Bed liner on floor very good result. The self etch primer spray can did "spit" small globs occasionally, can't see any real effect after all said and done, pleased with overall result.
Very happy with all POR products except one. I used everything…. Cleaner/degreaser, metal prep, the rust preventative, self etch primer, and finally the top coat. Everything worked as described except the top coat. U can take your finger nail and scratch it off. It’s almost like it didn’t adhere to the primer. Outside of that I’m very happy.
For maximum adhesion sand surfaces to be painted with 320 grit sandpaper. All surfaces must be clean and free of all dirt, loose rust, oil, grease, wax, soap, loose paint and any other matter. Clean painted and bare metal surfaces with POR-15 Cleaner Degreaser. Metal surfaces should be treated with POR-15 Metal Prep for maximum adhesion.
Previously Painted Areas:Scuff surface with 320 grit sand paper. Use POR-15 Cleaner Degreaser and POR-15 Metal Prep. Let surface dry thoroughly.
Bare Steel or Aluminum:Clean and prep surface then let dry thoroughly.
Shake can well before spraying. Spray two light coats of POR-15 Self Etch Primer and allow 10 to 15 minutes between coats. POR-15 Self Etch Primer can be topcoated in 30 minutes. It is not necessary to sand POR-15 Self Etch Primer before topcoating.
Dry time:It cures to touch in 30-60 minutes. Second coat can be applied in 10-15 minutes, depending on ambient temperature and humidity.
Cleanup:To prevent clogs in spray nozzle, hold can upside down and spray until clear gas appears.
