In response to many customer inquiries requesting a quick drying and easy-to-apply coating which enables a restorer to quickly topcoat POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating and other base coats, we have developed POR-15 Self Etch Primer.

With the POR-15 Self Etch Primer spray can, you can even topcoat POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating that's been in place for months or years.

POR-15 Self Etch Primer is NOT a high-build primer like POR-15 High Build Primer, but it can be sprayed on almost any painted surface and can be top coated in 20 - 30 minutes. It bonds incredibly well to POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating, and all topcoats bond incredibly well to POR-15 Self Etch Primer. It can be sanded lightly, and if desired, multiple coats may be applied.

In situations where you are topcoating a very old POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating finish, we first recommend a light sanding with any 280 to 320 grit paper.

This self-etching primer spray paint for metal replaces Tie Coat Primer.

Still finding time

I haven't had time yet to use this yet. Lots of irons in the fire and project car takes a back seat. I'm sure it will be great!

POR 15 Self Etch Primer in a spray can

The spray nozzle on the spray can seemed to allow the primer to flow out of the can vey consistently, without any material buildup on the nozzle. Primer went on to item being coated in a consistent wet, non-dry spot manner. Able to apply even amount of material in hard to reach locations on item without invoking a material ‘run’ or ‘sag’. Primer was applied over a substrate surface that was mix of bare metal and 40 plus years old factory original coating, prepared using red Scotchbrite, and POR 15 Cleaner and Metal Prep products. Primer was ready for Topcoat in 30 minutes, as stated in directions, all of this coating activity being perform in the mid 60 degree temperatures. Topcoat went on well over the primer, with no lifting, wrinkling, sagging, runs, or any of the other myriad of paint imperfections that can occur. I definitely recommend this product.
