POR-15 Cleaner Degreaser (formerly marine-clean) cleans and degreases in one application without leaving residues, noxious fumes, or flammable solvents. No other cleaner works as fast or as well. It makes petroleum-based cleaners almost obsolete because POR-15 Cleaner Degreaser can be diluted with water up to 4 to 10 times its volume while remaining more potent than other cleaners. This water-based and non-solvent cleaner removes grease, oil, mildew, algae, musty odors, soap films, wax. Use it to clean canvas, vinyl, nylon, holding tanks, grease traps, auto parts, and more.
Adhesion is important with most paints but has to be perfect for POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating to achieve its maximum effectiveness. A solvent wipe before painting didn't work with POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating; in the lab we found it did more harm than good by leaving a residue that didn't help with adhesion or appearance. We had to come up with a substance that would clean metal without leaving a residue. What we developed, POR-15 Cleaner Degreaser, contradicts all accepted theories about metal prep products: its water-based, not solvent-based and it cleans without leaving residues. In laboratory adhesion tests, our POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating using POR-15 Cleaner Degreaser first to clean the bare metal far exceeded every other prep product we found in the marketplace.
TIP: When applying to Aluminum or other alloys for clear coating, first test on an inconspicuous area for staining or discoloration. If staining or discoloration occurs, dilute Cleaner Degreaser 50% with water and retest.
Step 1: Clean it with POR-15 Cleaner Degreaser
“We used the POR-15 Cleaner Degreaser to remove any surface oils or other contaminants on the metal. After primer, the correct semi-gloss black paint from POR-15 was applied with a spray gun and compressor on all parts of the frame.”

I bought the whole POR-15 kit. The Degreaser, the surface prep, and the paint. Two of three of these are a poor fit to the entire job I bought them to do for one very specific reason: They require water to wash clean before paint can be applied.
Here's why that's a really bad mix for most chassis work AND has seasonal limitations:
A. Most chassis have a lot of complex details, so washing it all down multiple times is a very seasonally available action for most of the U.S.
B. Getting under a vehicle to wash all of the stuff off is a near impossibility.
C. Putting water (especially pressurized, as seen in car washes) on a rusty chassis that you're trying to treat is like cutting on a wound that you're trying to heal... any water you can't dry will sit on the chassis and rust it.
D. Some chassis have really complex layered materials, so thrusting water into them multiple times to get all of the cleaning and prep materials off is absolutely counter to what many of us are trying to accomplish.
In simplest terms, this product is a total flop for my application -- refinishing and preventing rust on a chassis. In fact, it's so counter, I now do not even see why or how this product has gained popularity.
As a speculative aside, the cleaner degreaser has the same smell and consistency as car wash soap. If it's that or a relative of that, this company is taking all of its customers -- they must be selling a gallon with a 20:1 profit margin.
Needless to say, I'm not happy with the POR-15 product or system. And, now realize that their marketing vastly outstrips their engineering or understanding of customer uses and needs.
Need to use open can within 24 hrs, preferably less. Hard to seal can and open after 24 hrs and a film forms on the surface. Great stuff, self leveling and goes on well with a brush. Extremely durable. Do not paint over threaded holes as you will have to retap to clean out.
Works like a charm! Thank you!
POR-15 Cleaner Degreaser should be diluted with hot water. Four parts water to one part Cleaner Degreaser (4:1) works well for most jobs; but may be diluted up to ten parts water to one part Cleaner Degreaser (10:1). After using Cleaner Degreaser rinse job thoroughly with water. Metal Surfaces cleaned with Cleaner Degreaser should always then be treated with POR-15 Metal Prep before painting.
Caution Cleaner Degreaser may stain alloy surfaces.
